The fact he’s nice about homosexuals and seemingly anti-greed really shouldn’t make him stick out on the radio… but it does. His socially-conscious, progressive lyrics are sadly far too rare in modern pop. Macklemore & Ryan Lews “This Unruly Mess I’ve Made” (Rap/Pop) – FAIR PLAY I really like Macklemore.

This album is really solid metal I probably would have absolutely adored it 12 years ago but these days I’m probably not going to suddenly get massively into Anthrax… but a cool band with a solid sound none-the-less. I liked this.Īnthrax “For All Kings” (Thrash Metal) – I overlooked Anthrax during my teenage years when I was getting into Metallica, Slayer et al which is a shame because I heard have they’re massive comic nerds and sing about The Punisher and shit.

With the EP at only 4 songs long, every song batters you around the head and Charli fucks off before you have chance to get bored. Anyway this hyperactive pop music recklessly swerves between sounds and styles as diverse as Die Antwoord to Scooter. It made me feel young again.Ĭharli XCX “Vroom Vroom EP” (Pop) – I’ve been reliably informed that this new material doesn’t sound much like Charli XCX’s old stuff (I’d never heard of her until this point). A lot of indie music like this suffers because it’s too “twee”, but this actually benefits from it because it sounded sincere to me, honest and simple in a “we’re truly outsiders” sort of way – which so many “cool” indie rock bands simply don’t have. I was really transported to America with this music (edit: they’re from London), imagining staring at a pretty girl across a mosh pit or a good club in a time before hipsters existed. Yuck “Stranger Things” (Indie Rock) – Usually fuzzy indie rock like this doesn’t do anything for me, but there is something about the Yuck sound that really connected with me. From my point of view he is easily the most inspiring and mesmerising artist of my generation. Kendrick Lamar “untitled unmastered” (Hip-Hop/Rap) – The man is a genius. The guitars sound amazing, her gravelly voice carries a weight to it that speaks volumes. Much like Lucinda Williams, Bonnie creates a sound and feeling of late nights and bars… this album wouldn’t feel out of place in an Oliver Stone film or maybe even the diner in Twin Peaks. The following albums were released on (or around) the 26th February 2016…īonnie Raitt “Dig In Deep” (Blues/Country) – I came into this challenge confidently believing that my least favourite genre of music was country, and now here I am stating for the second time this year that one of my favourite albums of the week is a (at least heavily influenced) country one.
